Attention all 11th Grade Students
ACT and the MME (Michigan Merit Exam)-Replaces MEAP

The ACT and the Michigan Merit Exam is being given to all 11th grade students who have attained sufficient credits for the testing. This is a high stakes test and students need to take it seriously. Scores from these tests are used for college admission.

Michigan’s High School MEAP test was replaced in the spring of 2007 by the Michigan Merit Exam, or “MME.” All students will be required to take it. Because the new Merit exam combines several tests into one, it will provide students with:

1. A free ACT college entrance exam score that can be used to apply to any Michigan college and many others.

 2. A free ACT WorkKeys assessment that can be used to qualify for a job or work training.

The goal is to help students as they transition to further schooling or work after high school. The test also will help schools measure how well they are preparing students.

On the first day of testing, the focus of the exam is on math, reading, writing, English, and science. Although the best way to prepare for the ACT is by taking rigorous, college-prep classes throughout a student’s academic career, tutoring and test preparation are available through several different sources including Michigan Virtual High School www.mivhs.org or at ACT’s website www.act.org. Prep is offered through the Internet, through books like The Real Guide to ACT Prep, or through private educational tutoring services. This test will take approximately five hours to complete.

On the second day of testing, students will take the WorkKeys exams and the Michigan Mathematics exam. The WorkKeys exam will focus on two tests: Applied Mathematics and Reading for Information. These tests will provide additional information on student’s math and reading skills and was designed as a work preparedness assessment. More information about these two tests can be found at www.act.org and clicking on the information for WorkKeys. After completing the WorkKeys exam students will take the Michigan Mathematics Exam which covers the remaining math content that is not covered by the ACT or WorkKeys. These tests will take approximately three hours to complete.

On the third day of testing, students will take the Michigan Science and Social Studies exams. These tests will last approximately three and a half hours.

Students with a qualifying score overall on the Michigan Merit Exam are still eligible to receive the Michigan Merit Award which can be used to pay for college in the state of Michigan. All eleventh grade students are expected to attend and take the exam. Students who are absent from school on the day of testing will still take the exam on makeup days which will require a loss of class time. Please spend some time reviewing and preparing for the ACT and WorkKeys exams through the resources provided.
