Work-Based Learning Opportunities
Cooperative Education / Capstone Experience
Cooperative education provides the student the opportunity to
develop competitive occupational skills performed at business/industry standards be
linking the classroom instruction to basic skill training. This is accomplished
through carefully supervised on-the-job training which may lead to full-time employment or
related continuing education. A related class is required and students may be
released early from school.
Externship
An externship is an unpaid placement clearly related to a student's
career goal. This experience is an integral part of the student's vocational class
instruction in grades 10 to 12. It offers students enrolled in a vocational class
the unique opportunity to gain real-world experiences as an extension of their classroom
setting.
Internship
An internship offers an opportunity to explore business and/or
professional positions in a paid or non-paid job placement clearly related to the
student's established career goal and identified on the EDP. No related class is
required. On-site career information and pre-career skills are gained by working
one-to-one with the adult supervisor. Credit is also earned.
Job Shadowing
A brief time, usually half or a full day, a student spends on
the job with an occupational or professional person. The student learns about the
career as well as the required education, skill and physical requirements, attitudes, and
work habits needed for that occupation.
Mentorship
The pairing of a student with a person who has skills in a career
area and who can encourage and support career-related growth, provide information, and
guide skill development.
Work Experience
A work-based learning opportunity provides for students who will be
working at one job during the school year. This includes both paid and unpaid
experiences in a workplace setting. Students must successfully complete the work
experience to receive credit. Students need not take a related class on instruction.
