Seminar Program

Providing an opportunity to improve academic learning so all students can be successful

Structure

Seminar is an 85 minute period, just like every other block. Students report to their assigned Seminar teacher for the first 15 minutes. After that time, students are permitted to travel twice to teachers on their current schedule. Students may elect to stay in the same location for both resource times. Students are encouraged to travel.

Seminar (Freeze Time)  15 Minutes
Resource Time 1           35 Minutes
Resource Time 2           35 Minutes

Period Uses

  • Provide students with a connection to staff and peers across the grade levels

  • Develop effective time management and study habits

  • Increase accessibility to teachers and resources during the school day

  • Seminar period meets every Tuesday and Friday

Tutoring

Retesting

Remedial work

Mentoring

Computer use

Lab use

Media Center Research

Test Preparation

Make up work

Assemblies

College Visits

Peer Tutoring

Grade Level Activities

Meeting Counselor

Sports Meetings (1 per semester)

Student Responsibilities

Sign up in advance for resource time with teachers

Travel only to teachers that appear on student's schedule

Use time in a constructive and productive manner

Make up missed work

Be a positive force in making the Seminar Classroom an effective learning environment

Adhere to Waterford School District Attendance Policy

Arrive on time to Seminar and resource times

Bring sufficient work to complete during Seminar time

No loitering in the halls, restrooms, or other inappropriate places

 

Students Will Lose Seminar Points

Socializing

Sleeping

Disruptive Behavior

Eating

Using electronic devices for game playing, listening to music, etc.

Playing cards or other types of games

Taking too long to travel (3 minutes or less)

 

Seminar will count as 1/4 credit each year towards graduation

Criteria for Acquiring Credit:

Each student may receive up to 10 points for Seminar period

The points will be broken down as follows:

Seminar (Freeze Time)     2 Points
Resource Time 1              4 Points
Resource Time 2              4 Points

Eight points is considered passing each Seminar period.

Attendance Policy for Seminar

Students will lose credit for Seminar at 7 absences.  Students who attend only one Seminar per week due to their schedule (OTC, Co-op, etc.) will lose credit at 4 absences.

Seminar will count as 1/4 credit each semester towards graduation. 

Students must have 80 percent of total possible points and meet the Seminar attendance requirement to earn their 1/4 credit.

Consequences of failure:

  • Students who do not pass Seminar will be required to complete 36 hours of community service during the summer

  • Community Service will be coordinated through youth assistance and the summer school
