that “the United States has rich experience in supporting

Excellence in Education – 3rd place award given
to the ACE Program
The Oakland Press and Oakland Schools honor
outstanding educational programs throughout Oakland County.
Waterford’s ACE (Academic and Character Education) Program through
Safe Schools/Healthy Students received third place recognition for
excellence in unique academic and social learning.
Schools Addressing Cyber and Traditional Bullying
Waterford Schools is highlighted for the extensive
bullying prevention programs that are in place, including the
collaboration among Waterford Schools and the Waterford Coalition
for Youth to provide cyber bullying education to all 6-12 grade
students.
Truancy and Excessive Absences gain Importance
Katherine Tabor, Juvenile Justice Liaison, speaks
to the unique services that she provides to the schools in order
to decrease the truancy rate and provide support to students and
families.
New Report Shows that the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative
Can Reduce Violence and Promote Safer Schools
Safe Schools/Healthy Students works! The Substance
Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reports
that school districts participating in the grant reported fewer
students involved in violent incidents, decreased levels of
experienced and witnessed violence, and improvements in overall
school safety and violence prevention.

National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day
The Waterford School District is participating in the National
Mental Health Awareness Day, which is May 7, 2009. Recognizing
teen depression will be the focus. Depression is so widespread
among students that the most recent recommendation of the
physician’s advisory board recommended routine screening for all
teens for depression. Waterford School District is committed
through the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative, to help
educate teens and parents about the signs of depression and the
ways to get help.
