Creative Activities - A Few Ideas To Get You Started!

Vegetable Prints
Poster Paint Raw Vegetables Sheet of paper
Sharp knife (for adults) Heavy Paper Plate Newspaper
  1. Cover the table with the newspaper.
  2. Ask  a grown-up to use the knife to cut vegetables with a flat surface showing.
  3. Pour a thin layer of paint into a heavy paper plate.
  4. Dip the flat side of the vegetable in paint.
  5. Press vegetables onto paper for vegetable prints.

 

Chicken Feed (serves 6)
2 cups Cheerios 1 cup peanuts 1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup raisins 1 cup M&M's
 
Ideas: Put in individual-sized bags or cups for a special snack.
Talk along as a snack on a walk or to the park.
Make after reading a book with a chicken or related topic such as Rosie's walk, Hattie and the Fox, Chicken Little, The little red hen, Minerva Louise.

 

Paper Bag Puppets
Lunch-size paper bags Crayons, markers, etc. Construction paper, fabric, or ANYTHING!
 
Ideas: Make Puppets for the characters in a story.
Talk about how the characters are the same, different.
Put on a puppet show, retelling the story.
Use anything available to decorate to get child's desired effect.
Make puppets just for the fun of it, not worrying about a particular story or design.

Celery Wagons
Celery Sticks, 2" Carrot Slices (Disks) Toothpicks Fillers
  1. Wash the celery and cut it into 2" sticks.
  2. Cut cleaned carrots into disks for wheels.
  3. Push toothpicks through celery and attach carrot wheels (May need to trim toothpicks).
  4. Fill with peanut butter, cream cheese, raisins, cheese, etc. (Remove toothpick before eating!)

 

Scientific Surveys (general Ideas, not ordered)
  1. Listen to what your child is thinking, wondering, deciding (such as "Everybody likes vanilla ice cream better than chocolate") and pick out the key factors or elements.
  2. Do a survey of who's in your house, maybe offering taste sample if appropriate.
  3. Chart these ideas and see who likes what the most, last, etc.
  4. Make predictions or other connections.
