APEX (Achieving Preschool Excellence)                                                                           <--Back

APEX is a preschool program for four year olds whose families have situations which might interfere with the child’s success at school. Some examples are: loss of parent through death or divorce; family unemployment; chronic illness of parent or child; family history of learning problems; etc.

The funding comes from the Michigan Department of Education through a competitive grant written and administered by Oakland Family Services. Both in-district and out-of-district families are eligible to apply for this program. Fifty-one percent of the families must qualify financially.

Classes are held at Sandburg Elementary in the morning, Monday through Thursday. On Fridays the staff work on lesson planning, make home visits, and prepare reports.  Parents are responsible for transportation to and from this program.

The High/Scope curriculum which is used in this program includes the Child Observation Record (COR) for assessment. A strong literacy component emphasizes letter identification, story re-telling, rhyming words, and letter sounds. The program also encourages children to make choices and follow through.

The teacher is certified with an early childhood endorsement. The assistant teacher has attended training workshops relevant to early childhood. For more information on enrollment please call the Head Start office at 248.666-4811.

Inspire, educate, and empower our students for their future!
