Welcome to Houghton Elementary

School Overview

Houghton Elementary School (K-5th) combines a strong academic program and extra-curricular activities. The Michigan Department of Education has designated Houghton Elementary as a Michigan Blue Ribbon Exemplary School which is the most prestigious education award in the state. The Blue Ribbon distinguishes Houghton Elementary for their excellence in leadership, teaching, curriculum, student achievement, parent involvement, and community support. 

In addition, in the spring of 2019 Houghton Elementary received The Excellence in Education Award from The Michigan Association of School Boards and SET-SEG. Over 100 Waterford School District Staff volunteer their time to run The Sweet Reads Bookmobile and Ice Cream Truck. Students are able to visit scheduled stops and receive free books and ice cream throughout the summer. By increasing student engagement as readers during the summer, the Sweet Reads Truck is preventing summer reading loss. The Waterford Foundation for Public Education along with the Mary Lou Simmons Legacy Endowment funded Sweet Reads with over $25,000 in the first two years of the program. In 2019, The SET SEG Foundation awarded $2500 grants to 10 extraordinary Michigan public school programs. Sweet Reads was one of the recipients. Houghton Elementary and the Sweet Reads committee received the award on behalf of the one hundred volunteer staff and over 1500 students who have also been a part of this innovative program.
