Work Permits are Changing and are Available Online
Effective October 2, 2026
- A new State of Michigan Portal: The new Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP) is effective October 2, 2026.
- Schools can no longer issue permits: Effective the same day, schools are no longer allowed to authorize work permits
- Already have a permit? You're covered. Work Permits issued prior to October 2, 2026, will be deemed acceptable by the State of Michigan.
New Online Tool Coming Soon for Youth Employment Permits
Michigan Department of Education is sharing the following message from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity:
The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity is preparing to launch the new Youth Employment Permit Portal, a centralized online system that will modernize the state’s youth employment permit process and make it more convenient and accessible for minors, families and employers. Local school districts and nonpublic schools will no longer issue youth employment permits.
Beginning Oct. 2, 2026, employers and minors will use the new portal to complete the youth employment permit process through one statewide system.
Key Changes:
- A new State of Michigan portal opens: The new Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEEP) becomes effective October 2, 2026.
- Schools can no longer issue work permits: Effective October 2, 2026, schools are no longer allowed to authorize work permits.
- Already have a permit? You're covered: Work permits issued prior to October 2, 2026 will still be deemed acceptable by the State of Michigan.
