What is Dual Enrollment?

High school dual enrollment is an educational option for high school students which allows them to take college courses during the school day to receive high school and/or college credit, based upon Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act 160 of 1996; and Career and Technical Preparation Act 258 of 2000. The high school district may assist in paying for the course(s) if:

  • Student has earned sufficient credits to be in Grade 9, 10, 11, or 12.
  • High school counselor and student choose eligible postsecondary courses which will apply toward credit for high school graduation.
  • Student is enrolled in both the Waterford School District and postsecondary institution simultaneously.
  • Student is enrolled in at least one course at the high school and carrying a combination of seven classes between the two institutions.
  • Postsecondary courses do not duplicate courses offered at the high school.
  • Student must meet the State of Michigan eligibility requirements including valid test scores in the subject area of the post secondary course; high school GPA of 2.5.
  • At time of enrollment student can choose to receive college credit, high school credit, or both. Credit toward high school graduation will equate to .5 credit per college course successfully completed. Student’s high school transcript will reflect college course(s) taken and calculated into GPA.
  • Transportation to post secondary institution is the student’s responsibility.

Will there be any other costs that the district does not pay?

  • The portion of the tuition and fees to be covered by the Waterford School District is determined by a formula developed by the Michigan Department of Education identified in Public Act 160. Any additional expenses not authorized by the high school will be the responsibility of the student.
  • Student is responsible for payment of a college course if the student withdraws from the course or fails the course. If the student does not repay this money, the school district may impose sanctions against the student as determined by the Waterford School District.

What are considered to be eligible college courses?

  • Courses that are not offered by Kettering or Mott High Schools (including AP, online, or vocational-technical program).
  • Courses offered by Kettering or Mott High Schools, but determined by the Board of Education not to be available to the student because of scheduling conflicts beyond the student’s control.
  • Course cannot be a hobby, craft, recreational, physical education, theology, divinity or religious education.
  • Student’s year in school determines the number of post secondary courses allowed for enrollment.

How do I receive reimbursement for the costs of books for dual enrollment courses?

  • Contact the Office of Instructional Services for Waterford School District
  • Submit proof of a passing grade of the dual enrolled class
  • Provide the original receipt for the purchase of books/materials
  • Provide the books that were purchased to the Office of K12 Instructional Services for Waterford School District
  • Please allow two weeks processing time from the date of submission of documents

What is Placement Testing at OCC (Oakland Community College)?

Students entering OCC may submit SAT or ACT scores to bypass placement testing for English and Math. To place into OCC classes that award college credit, SAT scores must meet the following standards:

  • Evidence Based Reading and Writing score of 480 or higher along with a Writing and Language score of 25 or higher
  • Math score of 530 or higher

If SAT scores fall below the standards listed above then placement tests will need to be taken. OCC uses ACCUPLACER for English placement and ALEKS for Math placement. Placement tests measure skill levels only and there is no passing or failing of the tests. Practice tests on the OCC website are REQUIRED before a student can attempt the actual placement tests.

All placement tests are taken at the Academic Support Center at any Oakland Community College campus. ACCUPLACER and ALEKS must be taken on different days. Two appointments are required: one for ACCUPLACER and one for ALEKS. Each test takes approximately two hours.

OCC also offers the ESL/MTELP, or Michigan Test of English Language Proficiency, which is a language placement exam measuring a student’s ability in English as a second language. The test structure is similar to other Michigan Proficiency exams in that it is a multiple choice format. The MTELP consists of grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension sections.

Students requiring accommodations who may need assistance on placement tests should contact the ACCESS office at OCC prior to taking a placement test. The student will need to provide documentation of a qualifying disability and its functional limitation.

When is the best time to begin the Dual Enrollment process?

Many post secondary institutions begin course registration during the middle of July for fall classes. Please meet with your high school counselor in the early spring to begin the Dual Enrollment process for fall classes. Please understand that the high school counselors may not be available to process applications during the month of July. Please contact the high school counseling office to determine availability of the counselors to process forms. Note dates of submission to meet college/university deadlines: Fall - due to K12 Office by end of first week of August; Winter - due to K12 Office by end of first week of December.
